Questions About Fraxel Laser Treatments

How does the Fraxel® Fractional Resurfacing Laser System work?

The Fraxel laser utilizes a revolutionary process called fractional resurfacing. Instead of treating the entire surface area of the skin, Fraxel applies controlled amounts of heat to targeted areas of the skin’s surface. This process allows the skin to naturally heal itself very quickly following the laser surgery treatment.

What skin conditions does the Fraxel Laser treat?

The Fraxel re:store® effectively treats wrinkles, sun spots and other photodamage on the face, neck, hands, shoulders, chest, arms and legs. The laser surgery treatments are not limited to only photodamage; it can also be used for treating acne scars on the face, chest, and back. Our other Fraxel laser system, the Fraxel re:store® DUAL, takes fractional skin resurfacing to the next level. This system utilizes a new wavelength that better address skin discoloration issues such as the dyschromia, a pigmentation disorder, on the entire body.

Is Fraxel Laser Treatment safe?

Yes! Fraxel utilizes a non-invasive technique that involves few risks. In addition, treatments require little to no recovery time. Fraxel laser treatment is still technically a laser surgery and should only be performed by a qualified dermatologist. The cosmetic dermatologists at Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery were among the first dermasurgeons worldwide to offer Fraxel.

Is the Fraxel Laser Surgery treatment uncomfortable?

As with any laser surgery, there will be some level of discomfort. To reduce your discomfort, your cosmetic dermatologist will apply a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure.

How long does the Laser Treatment take?

We ask that you plan 2-2 ½hours for each treatment visit. This includes the preoperative treatment, laser surgery and a brief in office recovery time.

How many Laser Treatments will I need?

Results are often visible after the initial treatment! The majority of our laser surgery patients achieve their desired results within a series of 3-5 treatments. However, for deeper wrinkles around the mouth or forehead, may require additional treatments.  Treatments are typically performed every 3-4 weeks, however depending on the condition your cosmetic dermatologist may prescribe treatments more or less frequently.

Are there any side effects associated with Fraxel therapy?

Fraxel re:store patients may experience redness, swelling, dryness or peeling for 2-7 days after each laser treatment. Fraxel re:store DUAL patients may experience redness, swelling, bronzing, dryness or peeling for up to 14 days after each treatment, depending on the treatment area. Infrequently, patients may develop skin rawness or cold sores if the patient is prone to them. If you have a history of cold sores, please inform your physician so that an antiviral can be prescribed.
