Hair transplants using modern techniques can achieve long-lasting, natural results. At the W for Men, in downtown Washington DC, our physicians and hair transplant team are able to provide you with innovative, customized care that utilizes the latest hair transplantation technology.
Hair transplant has been performed for decades. It is based on the theory of donor dominance that describes how hair that is removed from the back of the scalp and transplanted into the thinning scalp will continue to grow, without suffering from the effects of male or female pattern hair loss.
Hair naturally grows in 1-4 hair groupings, or follicular units, on the scalp. In the past, physicians harvested 10- to 20-hair “plugs” that did not mimic natural hair growth. Recent advancements in hair transplantation have evolved to use more natural 1-4 hair follicular groupings rather than hair plugs. This technique results in a natural increase in hair, since the small grafts are placed individually to maintain their natural configuration.
Hair Transplant Technique
The two primary harvesting techniques to obtain hair for transplantation are follicular unit strip surgery (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUT strip surgery obtains hair by excision of a linear strip of the back of the scalp resulting in a linear scar. Unfortunately, this technique does not appeal to the public’s preference for minimally invasive surgical procedures that have less scarring and quicker recovery times.
At the Washington Institute of Robotic Hair Restoration, our goal is to provide the most natural results at both the sites where hairs are harvested and where hairs are transplanted. To achieve these results, our philosophy is to avoid any visible linear scars by perfecting the latest FUE technology, the ARTAS robotic hair procedure.
