Laser Hair Removal Questions

Washington, D.C.

What distinguishes Laser Hair Removal from other methods?

Laser Hair Removal selectively targets only the hair follicle while leaving surrounding tissue largely unaffected. The laser uses pulses of light that cause little to no irritation to the skin.  Other hair removal methods affect the skin significantly:  razors scrape along the surface, waxing may cause allergic reactions, and electrolysis can significantly damage the skin.

Is Laser Treatment uncomfortable?

Each laser pulse may cause a tingling or burning sensation.  Patients often describe it as a series of rubber band snaps. If you are afraid of the discomfort or find it is too much, topical anesthetics may be used.

How long does each treatment take?

The length of treatment depends on the size of the area being treated. Each laser pulse treats a skin area about one-quarter inch square and takes about a second. The lip takes one to two minutes. The bikini area takes 15-30 minutes. Underarms take 15- 30 minutes. Other areas, such as the legs, arms or back, require significantly longer treatment times.

What will my skin feel like after treatment?

Within a few minutes, the treated area may appear pink and feel like mild sunburn for a couple of hours. The laser does not damage the skin or cause a wound so no bandages or antibiotics are necessary.

When will I see results?

A few days after treatment, your skin will begin to shed the treated hairs. They can be washed off with a gentle soap. At this point, you will see a reduction in hairs in the treated area, but multiple treatments are normally required to achieve optimal results.

How many treatments will be necessary?

Hair follicles contain the most melanin when they are actively producing hair. At any given time, some hair follicles are dormant so they are less effectively treated. Several visits are necessary to affect complete hair removal. We will work with you to develop an optimal treatment strategy, but a good rule of thumb is that at least three monthly treatments are necessary to start.

How long do the results last?

Approximately 50% - 80% of hairs are reduced after a series of 3 or more laser treatments.   Thin-skinned areas like the bikini and underarm show the best response, while thicker skin areas with coarser hair, like the chin and back, do not respond as well.

Can dark hair and skin be treated?

Yes. Our advanced laser technology allows us to treat any skin type. Dark hair has the best response to treatment. Light hair (blonde or gray) remains difficult to treat because it does not absorb laser energy due to a relative lack of pigment in light hair shafts.
