Raise your hands if you’re embarrassed to raise your hands. Your hands can make you look old, but we can help! Don’t worry; you’re not alone. Thin, crepey hands with prominent veins and age spots are among the biggest complaints I hear from patients. Most people are aware of the importance of using a sunscreen with an SPF 30 on their face and other exposed areas, but forget all about the tops of their hands. Now their face looks a decade younger than their hands.
It’s never too late to start giving your hands some much-needed TLC. This starts with judicious use of sunscreen. Slather it on your hands just like you do on your face to forestall premature aging and reduce your chances of developing skin cancer.
Keeping your hands well hydrated also helps them look younger and brighter. Apply a moisturizer at least twice a day to the backs of your hands where dryness is more pronounced. Some daily moisturizers have an SPF30 and can do double-duty.
We have several in-office procedures to help patients who would like to turn back the hands of time. We can use injectable fillers to plump up thinning hands, masking the vein-y appearance. Radiesse is the only dermal filler that is US Food and Drug Administration-approved for hand augmentation at the current time, but others, such as Juvederm or Restylane, can also add volume back to aging hands. Sometimes, a combination of fillers plus intense pulsed light and/or Fraxel laser may be needed for full hand rejuvenation. Lasers can clear sun spots, and many also stimulate your own production of collagen to restore elasticity from the inside out. Your hands can make you look old, but we can make you look younger!
