Let’s face it: we all want our skin to look as youthful as possible for as long as possible. Visible signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots can make skin look much older much quicker. But in the pursuit of brighter, tighter skin, many people end up overdoing it on surgeries and injectables. Here’s how to age gracefully without looking plastic.
Often, people make the mistake of going years and years without taking proper care of their skin, then trying to fix it all with cosmetic surgery and dermatology treatments. The chance of these procedures looking natural becomes more slim if the skin is already in poor shape. So the best route is to focus on the foundations of anti-aging skin care -- ideally by your mid-twenties -- so you can keep things healthy before adding in wrinkle reducing treatments.
Use high-quality, non-comedogenic skin care products formulated for your skin type. Look for ingredients like the wrinkle reducer retinol, the humectant hyaluronic acid, and the chemical exfoliants alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). Use an eye cream that’s thick enough to moisturize the tiny pores around the eye area. And find a moisturizer that’s not only hydrating enough for aging skin (which becomes dryer over time) but also has an SPF of 30 or higher to protect you from the ultimate skin ager: the sun.
If you’ve already got your skin care routine down and need a little extra boost, dermal fillers and injectables are a great place to start. While Botox injections will undoubtedly help with those deep creases, dermatology injectable fillers like Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane can help treat fine lines on the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, vertical lip lines, and sagging areas around the cheeks.
There are two keys here: for one, work with an experienced, knowledgeable provider. Do your homework when it comes to finding someone to administer your fillers and injectables. Board-certified dermatologists are always the safest route to take when receiving these treatments. And second, be strategic about where and when you get these treatments. Trying to target every wrinkle, line, and sagging area at once can lead to more dramatic (and therefore obvious) results. Start with one or two problem areas and continue to add on over time if you wish -- slowly, and with your dermatologist’s expert advice.
Skin tightening treatments and body contouring procedures are some other options to fight wrinkles and aging, returning the face and body to a more youthful look. A popular treatment called Ultherapy, for example, uses highly focused ultrasound technology to reduce the appearance of loose, sagging skin. Other skin tightening procedures may require surgery.
A simple and affordable option for brightening dull skin and evening out skin tone is to receive a chemical peel treatment every six to eight weeks. This chemical exfoliant has different depth options depending on the issues you’re targeting and can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, eliminate scarring, and decrease the appearance of dark spots.
