KYBELLA is a new non-surgical treatment developed by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals for submental fullness (double chin). It is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for adults with moderate-to-severe double chins. The Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery is one of the first practices to offer this revolutionary treatment.
If you are bothered by your double chin, you are not alone. According to a 2014 survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), nearly 70% of people reported that they were bothered by their double chins (or submental fullness). Double chin is common in women and men and is caused by aging, genetics and (less often) weight gain. It detracts from an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance– leading to an older, heavier look.
Individual results may vary.
KYBELLA is identical to deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. When injected into the skin, the fat cell membrane is disrupted which causes the fat to dissolve. Once destroyed, these cells cannot store or accumulate fat. A series of tiny injections are placed into the fatty areas at each treatment session. Typically, 1 or 2 additional treatments are administered at 1 month or longer time intervals for optimal cosmetic effect. Each minimally invasive procedure is performed in a 15-20 minute office visit. Results can be seen within weeks of treatment as the body naturally processes and permanently removes the destroyed fat cells.
We are recommending KYBELLA for those with submental fat or double chins who do not desire more invasive treatment such as liposuction or facelifts. Non-invasive Ulthera microfocused ultrasound therapy may be performed as an auxiliary treatment when further tightening and lifting of the jawline is desired.

What is KYBELLA?
KYBELLA (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved prescription nonsurgical treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”
How does it work?
The active ingredient in KYBELLA is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, the cells cannot store or accumulate fat, so patients lose their double chin and enjoy a slimmer jawline.
What causes submental fullness (double chin)?
Submental fullness is a common condition that affects adults – both male and female – and is caused by aging, genetics or weight gain. Submental fullness is often resistant to diet and exercise, making it particularly difficult for patients to remedy on their own.
What other treatments are there to reduce submental fullness?
Prior to KYBELLA’s development, more invasive techniques such as liposuction and surgery were the go-to treatment options. KYBELLA is the only non-invasive treatment available today.
What can I expect at my appointment?
The doctor will examine your submental fullness and photos will be taken of your profile to determine the extent of your submental fullness. The anticipated results to treatment will be discussed. A customized KYBELLA treatment regimen will be created for you. If you choose to proceed, you will have your first treatment session with a series of KYBELLA injections.
How is KYBELLA administered?
KYBELLA is administered by injections into the fat cells under the chin, personalized to the treatment goals of the patient. Each in-office treatment session takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
How many treatments are necessary?
You and your doctor will customize a KYBELLA treatment plan including how many treatments are anticipated given your desired chin profile. Your doctor will deliver the injections at each treatment session which are scheduled at least a month apart. Most patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile within two to four treatments. Up to six treatments may be administered.
How quickly do the results appear?
Generally, results appear within weeks to months of treatment.
How long do the results last?
When injected into the fat under the chin, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with KYBELLA is not expected.
What if there is weight gain after treatment with KYBELLA?
Patients in the clinical trials who gained weight after treatment did not experience the redevelopment of their submental fullness. Since KYBELLA is a new product, further follow-up with more patients will provide additional insight on this topic.
Are there any side effects?
The safety profile of KYBELLA is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. KYBELLA can rarely cause more serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can lead to an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. These side effects are temporary.
What are the contraindications?
KYBELLA should not to be used in patients with a history of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) or bleeding abnormalities.
