Picoway Laser

Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery is known worldwide as being a leader in laser skin surgery. We were one of the first practices in the world to offer PicoWay laser, an FDA-cleared laser treatment for the removal of tattoos and pigmented lesions. PicoWay laser incorporates picosecond (one trillionth of a second) pulse durations to generate ultra-short pulses with very high peak powers of laser energy on the skin. A strong photo-mechanical impact occurs that results in the fracturing of tattoo ink or pigment particles in the skin.

Picoway laser is recommended for the treatment of:

  • Multicolored tattoos
  • Pigmented skin lesions (brown birthmarks or sun spots)
  • Skin rejuvenation

A Typical PicoWay Laser Treatment

The procedure (which is commonly performed with topical anesthetic cream) can be completed in less than 30 minutes and is delivered by a board-certified physician. Any skin area with a tattoo or pigmented lesion can be treated with PicoWay. There is a mild recovery period (lasting a few days to as long as a week) after PicoWay treatment, during which time the treated skin should be protected from the sun with a bandage. Most tattoos take several treatments (typically 3 to 6 sessions or more) at 1 to 2 month time intervals in order to fade.

Benefits of PicoWay Laser Treatment

PicoWay can penetrate the skin with its picosecond pulse technology to better treat pigmented lesions. Improved results in fewer treatments – removing tattoos in as little as three to six treatments. PicoWay safely treats a wider variety of skin types (including light and dark skin).

Tattoos of any size, shape and color (including tattoos that have been unresponsive to other laser treatments) can be treated with PicoWay. No skin “ghosting” (or light discoloration where the tattoo used to be) is seen after PicoWay treatment.
